Not Your Grandmother's Mentorship Program

In conference rooms across the country, staff meeting announcements about mentorship programs have often met with mixed reactions. New hires, eager to scramble up the corporate ladder, almost always welcome the guidance of more experienced colleagues. But the mentors, who typically occupy mid- to upper-level management positions, are often less enthusiastic. They may find it difficult to balance their responsibility as a mentor with competing demands on their time.

Innovative businesses recognize the value of mentorship programs in training and retaining the best employees, and are working to create programs that are as beneficial to the mentor as the mentee. Ultimately, the relationship should provide insight as each learns of the experiences, goals and challenges of the other. A good personality match between mentor and mentee is crucial for a successful experience. Read more
