Change Comes to Small Towns

For Chatfield-Based Tuohy Furniture, Cultivating Diversity Is 'Just the Right Thing to Do'

In 1952, when Tuohy Furniture launched in Chatfield, Minnesota [22 miles southeast of Rochester], the town's population of 1,600 people was anything but diverse. "We started with eight guys, all Caucasian, who were German Lutherans and Norwegian Lutherans," said President and CEO Daniel J. Tuohy, who had not even been born yet at the time.

Today, while Chatfield's population [2,394 as of 2000] is still predominantly white, the city's demographics are growing more disparate with each U.S. Census, as Hispanics, Asians and other groups immigrate to the area. Thanks to Dan Tuohy, whose manufacturing company is widely lauded by industry experts and media for its bold and elegant designs of high-end office desks and institutional furniture, the community's students and citizens are learning to embrace differences among all people.
