Building a Diverse Pipeline

Many businesses claim that they would readily hire diverse applicants…if only they applied. Many companies are willing to take diversity if it comes to them, but they are either unwilling to make the needed effort to recruit, or they lack the understanding and resources to recruit effectively. They place ads in the paper, recruit from the same familiar schools, use the same interview protocol, and, not surprisingly, get the same meager results.

"Recruit Once, Hire Twice" Strategy Is Integral to IBM’s Diversity and Market Leadership

This summer through November 2006, IBM (AKA “Big Blue”) will host more than 51 weeklong EX.I.T.E. [EXploring Interests in Technology and Engineering] Camps for 1,700-plus middle-school girls at IBM sites around the world.

“Each year, we select diverse engineers and scientists who 'bleed blue' to connect with girls, get them excited about math and science, and then give them a good look at successful women working in a variety of tech-related careers at IBM,” explained Ron Glover, incoming (as of August 1) Vice President, Global Workforce Diversity. “It’s just one of the ways in which we simultaneously develop our talent life-cycle and position IBM as an attractive place to work.” Read on...
